US Secretary of State Antony Blinken, during his conversation with Foreign Minister from Lithuania Gabrielius Landsbergis, has announced that additional troops will be sent to the Baltic states, with 400 American troops expected to arrive in Lithuania in the coming days, writes anews, Pryscopic records.
Since the beginning of the attacks on Ukraine, the US has sent about 7,000 troops to Europe. Part of this contingent will now be stationed in the Baltic State and NATO member state.
Blinken also granted assurances of American solidarity to Lithuania and two other Baltic states of Estonia and Latvia. The US's “dedication to the Fifth Article -- an attack on one is an attack on all -- is steadfast”, Blinken said.
Since 2014, the US has sent troops to NATO's eastern border for training purposes.
Recent reports say there are at present about 500 US soldiers stationed in Lithuania.
All Baltic countries share their borders with Russia, with Lithuania and Latvia bordering Belarus.
Lithuania's president, Gintanas Nausea and Minister Landsbergis called for further empowerment in NATO's eastern zone, as the two stressed that Ukraine must be supported by everything needed for self-defense.
