Exercises simulating a war began on March 14th and will continue until April 1st.
Thirty thousand troops from 27 countries in Europe and North America are part of exercises led by Norway, including partners like Finland and Sweden who are not members of NATO.
One report says 220 planes have been deployed for exercise, as well as 50 ships, including two aircraft carriers from the UK and Italy.
NATO has said the exercise known as the Cold Answer is a regular and long-planned exercise, adding that this year's maneuver had been announced eight months ago and did not link with Russia's war in Ukraine.
On March 25th, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg met with the participating exercise troops north of Norway and said this exercise is showing that “NATO's power and unity in action”.
Stoltenberg had also indicated that this maneuver is of particular importance to NATO because Russia had increased its military presence significantly in this region, adding that NATO's presence in this area is not a provocation to conflict, but aimed at avoiding a conflict in order to ensure peace.
