NATO: Russia will never be able to win nuclear war

Secretary - General NATO, Jens Stoltenberg, at a press conference in Brussels today prior to the NATO summit, has said Russia must know it will never be able to win a nuclear war. He said that at tomorrow's summit he expects Alliance members to agree on strengthening [...]

He said that at tomorrow's summit, he expects Alliance members to agree to strengthen their position in all areas, with significant increases in forces on its eastern side.

The first “is the deployment of four new NATO combat groups to Bulgaria, Hungary, Romania and Slovakia, along with existing forces in the Baltic states and Poland. That means we'll have eight international combat groups on the east side, from Baltic to the Black Sea. We are facing a new reality for our security, so we have to restore our defence and do this in the long-term plan. Tomorrow, NATO leaders will repeat our support for Ukraine. Ukraine has the right to self-defence within the framework of the UN Charter, and we are helping Ukrainians realise this fundamental right”, Stoltenberg said.

He said he expects allies to agree tomorrow on additional support involving cyber security, as well as equipment that will help Ukraine protect itself from chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear threats.

Stoltenberg reiterated that NATO is offering unprecedented support to Ukraine, but added that its membership is not the summit's subject, as is the requirement for establishing a no-fly zone in Ukraine.

He has already commented yesterday's statement by Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov, who said Russia would use nuclear weapons only if its existence is threatened.

Russia must stop hitting nuclear weapons. It's dangerous and irresponsible. NATO is here to protect and protect all allies and we have conveyed a clear message to Russia: nuclear war cannot be won and cannot start. This alone highlights the importance of ending the war in Ukraine. We have to do everything we can to prevent war from escalating beyond the borders of Ukraine and to make it more deadly and dangerous than we see today. Any use of chemical, biological, nuclear weapons will radically change the nature of the conflict, and Russia should know that it will never be able to win a nuclear war”, Stoltenberg said.
