In 1999, the United States still had no embassy in Kosovo, as did other states. The US diplomatic mission has changed status in 2008 after Kosovo has declared independence. Menzies has returned for official visit in 2012 to Kosovo.
Menzies, who died at the age of 74, has been at the helm of American University in Kurdistan, Iraq.
Kosovo Foreign Minister Donika Grovall has written about his death, calling him Kosovo's friend and principal diplomat.
