A subsequent message from Ukraine's nuclear power company, Energoatom, says it is not yet clear whether radiation levels have been affected by the explosion.
Russia took over the largest nuclear power plant in Europe on March 4th, after being hit by shellings.
The plant, located some 550km (342 km) south east of the capital Kiev, on the banks of the Dnieper River, produces about 20% of all electricity in Ukraine.
