Two Russian aircraft breaking Swedish airspace earlier this month were equipped with nuclear weapons, writes the Daily Mail.
Crossing Gottland Island on March 2nd was a deliberate act designed to intimidate Sweden, according to the Swedish news channel TV4 Nyheterna. In all, four planes were launched by the Russian air base of Kaliningrad. They consisted of two Sukhoi 24, aircraft that were accompanied by two Sukhoi 27.
There were two attacking planes, which, according to the sources of TV4 Nyheter, were equipped with nuclear weapons.
The violation of Swedish territory lasted about a minute. The country's Air Force deployed two JAS 39 Grepe, which photographed intruders. It was then that the Swedish media said, confirmed that Russian planes were equipped with nuclear warheads.
This is a signal to Sweden that we have nuclear weapons and we can also consider using them,”, said strategic military expert Stefan Ring for TV4 Nyheter.
“We value it as a conscious action. Which is very serious, especially since [Russia] is a warring country”, Air Force chief Carl-Johan Edström added.
“cannot rule out the wrong navigation, but it all shows it was a deliberate act. That they crossed Sweden's borders. )
The incident came days after Russian President Vladimir Putin had threatened with military action against Sweden and neighbouring Finland if they were to join NATO.
The countries had held joint military exercises at that time.
