President Voldymyr Zelensky had accused Russia of going to a new <x0phase of terror” after Ukraine showed the images of what it said the mayor, Ivan Fedov, was going away with his eyes tied.
Melitopol was one of the first cities to fall into the hands of Russian forces and a new mayor was established. The Ukrainian government also accused Russia of kidnapping the town's mayor of Dneprorudne.
After Fedorov's release was announced, Ukrainian officials posted to social media a Zelensky video, calling the mayor and telling him it was “happy to hear the voice of a living man”.
Fedov is heard thanking the president for not abandoning him and said it would take one or two days to recover and then “will be at your command to contribute to our” victory.
