Europe's birth has taken the world's attention and the US secretary started visiting some of the Baltic states to give them assurances that if threatened by an attack, they have NATO behind them.
It has started in Lithuania, while visiting two other countries, once in the Soviet Union, Latvia and Estonia. All these states are in NATO, but Blinken is visiting them to ensure they are not at risk from Russia, which entered the territory of one of its neighbours, Ukraine, to invade.
“We are strengthening our common defence, so that we and our allies are prepared”, Blinken said on Monday, adding that US pledges in the NATO common defence pact are <x2-> holy”.
“We will protect every inch of NATO's territory, if the attack is”, the US secretary said, reports the Guardian.
He says no one should doubt NATO allies' readiness for intervention if it comes.
Ukraine is one of the states that were part of the Soviet Union, which after the breakup did not join either the European Union or NATO.
When this state, in recent years, was governed by pro-Western leadership, it approached their alliances, which prevented Russia.
Ukraine, under war terms, signed the application for membership in the European Union, while its president, Voldymyr Zelensky, demands that his state be joined in NATO, saying it does not give up that goal.
