Chernihivi police said there was a heavy artillery attack in the city and that among the civilians killed was an American citizen.
In Chernihiv, a town north of Kiev, at least 53 people were killed during the last 24 hours during heavy Russian air strikes.
US Secretary of State Antony Blinken also said Thursday that an American citizen was killed in Ukraine in the midst of the ongoing Russian invasion.
