Ukrainian officials say at least 35 people were killed and 134 others were injured today by a Russian missile attack. Moscow launched about 30 cruise missiles in the direction of the International Peace and Security Conservation Centre, a military base in western Ukraine near the border with Poland.
Ukrainian MP Lesia Vasylenko warned today that Russia will not stop in Ukraine, saying it is only “it is a matter of time before it attacks Poland”. Meanwhile, the United States said NATO would respond strongly if Russia hits the territory of a Western alliance country.
The United States issued a strong warning against Russia following its attack on the military base near the border with Poland. White House of National Security adviser Jake Sullivan said Russia would face a strong response from NATO if its attacks in Ukraine crossed its borders and hit the territories of Western alliance countries.
“President Biden has been constantly clear that the United States will work with their allies to protect every inch of NATO territory.”
He said NATO will respond even if Russia accidentally strikes the territory of a NATO country.
The attack on the military base near Ukraine's border with Poland follows a Russian threat to the West's crackdown on arms shipments in support of Ukrainian fighters.
On Saturday, a senior Russian diplomat said Moscow had warned the United States that it considered foreign shipments of military equipment to Ukraine targets of legislation to be hit on its part.
At the military base, not far from Lviv, NATO has in the past conducted military exercises with Ukrainian troops and has deployed military institutions to help the Ukrainian Armed Forces.
“Today the Lviv region was hit with rockets. According to preliminary data, more than 30 rockets were launched in the direction of the area. The air defense system worked and managed to intercept several missiles. The Yavoriv training centre was targeted at the” attack, Lviv region governor Maksym Kozytsky said.
He said this Russian attack is evidence that Ukraine needs NATO's help in protecting its air space.
For this reason we continue to call on NATO to close our airspace, because to fight an enemy that does not attack only by troops but also by cruise missiles, it is very necessary to have a good air defence system”, he said.
NATO troops in Poland are about 25km from the Ukrainian military base that was hit by Russia.
Poland is a key country for sending Western military aid to Ukraine.
Ukrainian MP Lesia Vasylenko warned today that Russia will not stop in Ukraine, saying it is only “it is a matter of time before it attacks Poland”.
The “Russians are trying to expand their borders and I think that within a short time they will start attacking Poland. Russia is not stopping. They will continue attacks throughout the Eastern European bloc to restore the Russian empire they have long dreamed of. In essence, this would be a declaration of war on the countries of Europe and those of NATO”, the Ukrainian MP said.
She said stronger sanctions would be needed to stop Russia's actions and called on France and Germany to toughen sanctions on Moscow.
The Russian attack on Ukraine, which began on February 24th, has caused more than 2.5 million people to leave the country.
The Kremlin describes his actions as a “special operation” for the demilitarisation of Ukraine. Kiev and Western allies call this a groundless pretext to start the war. / VoA
