Confusion has been caused over Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy's claim earlier that Turkey had vowed to close the straits to enter the Russian Sea.
Russia, through the Interfax news agency, has said there has been no official announcement of closure in question.
There are speculation that Zelenskiy's tweeting may have been a request for Turkey to take action, rather than a confirmation that he would be in the country, writes The Guardian.
The Montreux Convention, which regulates the straits of the Bosphorus and Dardanelles, says ships from the Black Sea states will be allowed to return to ports during wartime.
If Turkey were to move forward and stop warships from the strait, it would violate the convention.
