British officials estimate that another 14 Russian battalions are heading towards Ukraine, each numbers about 800 troops, while 100 battalions have already gathered at the border, considered enough force to launch the invasion.
British Prime Minister Boris Johnson warned that the situation had become “very, very dangerous”.
The ministers believe the Russian president has not yet given the order to attack Ukraine, and may never do so. But the continued increase of forces in over 150 thousand Russian soldiers prompted Johnson to interrupt a trip to Cumbria to call an emergency meeting for Tuesday.
Britain believes Russia has committed about 60% of its ground forces and doubled its air power, but thinks Putin can prolong the crisis for weeks or longer.
Meanwhile, Russia has always denied that it intends to invade Ukraine.
Olaf Scholz, Germany's Chancellor, will visit Moscow on Tuesday, though no diplomatic progress is expected, considering Russia's demands that Ukraine not join NATO and Western troops withdraw from Eastern Europe.
Last week, the US said the invasion could begin this Wednesday, February 16th, the day Ukrainian President declared “The Days of National Unity”.
