A conference, such as those held at the end of World War II, is needed for resolving the crisis in Ukraine, Pyotr Tolstoy, deputy chairman of Russia's Lower House of Parliament, otherwise known as Russian Duma, warned.
I believe that, after all these tensions, we should negotiate. Of course we need a new Yalta or a new Potsdam. The real Negotia for installing the security system in Europe, rather than a NATO base at our borders”, Tolstoy said in an interview for Belgian national radio (RTBF).
Conferences in Potsdam and Yalta were held in 1945. Participants were the United States, the United Kingdom, and the Soviet Union.
In Yalta, February 1945, it was agreed that Germany would be divided into four postwar occupations that were brought under the control of American, British, French, and Soviet forces. The city of Berlin was divided into similar areas.
At the conference in Potsdam, held in July of the same year, it was agreed that Germany should be divided into four occupation areas and that the German border should be moved west, while the group supported by the Soviet Union was recognised as Poland's legitimate Government.
Pyotr Tolstoy is one of 351 members of Duma that the European Union put on the blacklist, with the decision made on February 22nd, when the bloc adopted new sanctions against Russia.
