Jens Stoltenberg will become the next governor of Norway's Central Bank, when his mandate as secretary general NATO will end at the end of this year, the Norwegian government announced on Friday.
“I am grateful for my confidence and look forward to taking over the” job, Stoltenberg said of the work he will begin on December 1st.
The current governor of the Norwegian Bank, Oystein Olsen, has been set to withdraw after retaining the post since early 2011.
Stoltenberg, 62, was Norwegian finance minister between 1996 and 2000 and prime minister from 2000 to 2001. He again became Norway's prime minister in 2005, a post he held for another eight years.
He will give up his role as head NATO in late September, DW reports.
Stoltenberg became Secretary General NATO in 2014 and after a first successful mandate, its mandate in the Western military alliance was extended.
According to coalition sources, former British Prime Minister Theresa May, Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte, Estonia Prime Minister Kaya Kallas, former EU foreign policy chief Federica Moghrini, and Romanian President Klaus Iohannis have all been declared as potential candidates to succeed Stolenberg.
