The Ukrainian Army says the number of artillery attacks on the border between Ukraine and the regions of Donetsk and Luhansk, occupied by Russia, has fallen, although Moscow continues to collect troops within its borders. Voice of America journalist Victor Lymar went to this region and talked to some of the residents hoping there will be peace, yet they are preparing for war.
In Zolotoe, a town in the Luhansk region, Ukrainian soldiers are watching the situation.
There are several shots fired. So if I get out of the jungle I can get shot in the head”, says Oleksandr, a Ukrainian soldier.
civilians also live in the area, and shooting guns is common. 70-year-old Alexandra Gerasimova says she's used to shooting, but her livestock are not.
Look, this was damaged in 2017. We had no windows, I had to put new windows. These other things were damaged, I didn't have anything left after a rocket fell here”, she says.
There was a rocket in Nikolai's backyard a few weeks ago. One Stanytsia Luhanska resident says there are mines.
This is where they're putting mines. Here I found mine ropes. I don't know how they use”, says Nikolai.
The Ukrainian Army says the self-declared Luhansk People's Republic is deploying landmines against military personnel, which are prohibited not only by the Minsk Agreement but also by international conventions.
“We've seen the installation of landmines type POMZ-2. They are used by Russia, and many are now being used by illegal militant groups. They are being used not only against our army but also against civilians”, says Dennis, a Ukrainian soldier.
Just a few weeks ago, the village of Novo vo vo nivka in the Luhansk region was targeted by attacks and shootings. It's relatively peaceful here now, but the Ukrainian Army has noticed some moves.
They're starting to move. We see them walking without fear, and these days I can even see ammunition around the chest”, says Viktor, a Ukrainian soldier.
According to Ukraine's intelligence services, Russian troops are being actively trained. And they set up artillery units near the border.
“They have improved the exercise of artillery units in shooting ranges located in temporarily occupied territories”, says Bogdan, a Ukrainian soldier.
The Ukrainian army says that it would not be surprised if one day you saw the cannons in these polygons turning towards them. But they say they're not panicking, rather they're prepared for every situation.
