The Chinese government's special representative for Korean Peninsula Affairs and former ambassador of China to Great Britain, Liu Xiaoming, defended China's old position in preserving national sovereignty of states, writes CNN, the newspaper Express.
“Kina strongly believes that the sovereignty and territorial integrity of all states must be respected and protected and purposes and principles (of the United Nations Charter) should be respected with genuine sincerity. This position of China is continuous and clear and equally relevant to the Ukrainian issue”, the Chinese diplomat wrote.
His comments are interesting, since China was one of three states that abstained in voting on the UN Security Council resolution to condemn Russia's actions in Ukraine, which took place Friday evening.
India and the United Arab Emirates abstained in the vote, while Russia used it as a permanent member of the Security Council to block the resolution. After the voting process, 50 states issued a joint statement accusing Russia of abusing its right to veto.
In recent days, when many states condemned Russia's military actions in Ukraine, China has avoided the term “occupation”, but has called for peace and diplomacy, as well as accused the United States of “inciting fires”.
