This stance is clearly and firmly expressed by the German Chancellor, who has said that: “When I say the EU, I also mean the involvement of the Western Balkans.58.
He has continued by saying that it is not enough for the EU to have the membership of Balkan countries in the EU as politics alone, but much work needs to be done in that direction.
It is not enough to say that the prospect of EU membership is a strategic goal, but we must actively postpone it”
He has also supported the idea of diplomatic policies and the idea that independent partners only strengthen the EU.
Diplomacy will not fail because of us. While diplomacy is necessary without being naive this is ambition. Independent and strong partners do not weaken us, in fact they offer us to solve problems that even the biggest and the strongest cannot do alone”.
These statements come at a time when Europe is facing tensions between Ukraine and Russia.
