An A400M plane carrying about 70 troops, out of the 360 additional ones Germany is expected to deploy to Lithuania in the coming days landed in the country to support NATO forces in the area, an Alliance spokesman said. Troops include military forces and doctors from all over Germany, while reinforcements are expected to arrive late this week.
5,000 troops already deployed in Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia and Poland
Since 2017, NATO has deployed troops in Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia and Poland, responding to an annexing the Crimea from Russia in 2014. A total of 5,000 troops are located in the area under German, British and American command.
German troops make up about half of the 1100 troops already in Lithuania, with troops deployed from Belgium, the Czech Republic, Luxembourg, the Netherlands and Norway.
