Ukraine's ambassador to Turkey, Vasyl Bodnar, sought help from Turkey through the request for the closure of the Dardanele Strait after the Russian troops were introduced to Ukraine.
I'm calling on the Turkish administration, help Ukraine. We demand the closure of the Dardanelles. We want sanctions imposed on the Russian side. We're looking for the seizure of the Russian shares here”, Ambassador Bodnar wrote on the Ukrainian Embassy's Twitter account.
Earlier this month, six battleships and a Russian submarine passed “transit” through the Dardanele Strait and the Bosphorus Strait to the Black Sea for what Moscow called sea exercises near the waters of Ukraine, writes the Daily Sabah.
According to the 1936 Montreux Convention, Turkey, a NATO member, controls the Bosphorus and Dardanelles' Straits, which connect the Black Sea to the Mediterranean Sea. This pact gives Turkey the authority to regulate the passage “transt” of warships and to close these straits for foreign warships in wartime and when threatened.
Turkey's president, Rexhep Erdogan, was quoted as saying Wednesday that his country has good reports both with Ukraine and Russia, and that it cannot abandon them with any country, as well as will take measures to ensure that relations remain intact.
