The Russian Defence Ministry has announced that new military exercises will be held Saturday, February 19th, which will be monitored by Russian President Vladimir Putin, at the time of concerns that the Kremlin may be preparing for the invasion of Ukraine.
“on February 19th are scheduled to exercise strategic forces, which will be held under the supervision of Russian Federation Supreme Commander of Armed Forces Vladimir Putin, during which ballistic and floating rockets will be launched”, the ministry has said through an announcement on February 18th.
Troops and equipment of air space forces from the southern, northern and Black Sea will also take part in the exercise.
These statements come hours after Belarus's authoritarian leader, Alyaxander Lucashenka has arrived in Moscow to hold talks with Putin to decide about the withdrawal of Russian troops from Belarus when joint military exercises end on February 20th.
The participation of over 30,000 troops in these exercises has concerned the West about the real goals of the Kremlin for troop collection.
American intelligence estimates that some 130,000 troops and military equipment are located in border areas with Ukraine.
Russia has insisted that there are no plans for invasion, but at the same time requires guarantees for security issues in Europe, including for NATO not to expand to countries like Ukraine or other former Soviet republic, Georgia.
Moscow's demands on the West include those that:
- NATO ends military activity in Eastern Europe and withdraws troops from Poland and Baltic republics, Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania
- Atlantic Alliance not deploy missiles to countries close to or border with Russia
The United States and NATO have responded by saying Ukraine has the right to elect its allies, but have offered Russia the possibility of negotiating rockets and other issues.
If Russia invades Ukraine, this would not be the first time.
Russia annexed the Ukrainian Crime Peninsula in 2014.
This country also supports rebels in conflicts in eastern Ukraine, in which about 14,000 people have died./ REL
