Marioupol is one of Ukraine's largest ports in the Azov Sea and is located near the front line held by separatists supported by Russia in the Donnetsk region, which Vladimir Putin has recognised as an independent state.
The taking of Marioupolis would help Russia secure a direct land route to Crime, Russia's Ukrainian peninsula, in 2014.
