British troops who helped exercise in Ukraine will leave the country this weekend, British Armed Forces Minister James Heappey said, after warning that Russia could launch the “attack at any moment”.
Heappey said the small number of United Kingdom personnel sent to train Ukrainian troops on antitank missiles would withdraw, along with about 100 that would help with the wider training of troops as part of Operation Orbital.
Britain, along with all other NATO allies, has said it will not fight against any Russian attacks.
There will be no British troops in Ukraine if there is a conflict there. They will leave on the weekend”, Heapey said.
Western intelligence fears that the most likely scenario, in case of conflict, is that Russian forces will conduct a lightning attack aimed at surrounding Kiev, a city of more than 3 million people, and try to force a regime change. As a first step, Moscow's forces would be intent on rapidly degrading Ukraine's army in a lightning strike.
But US and Great Britain forces are flocking to Poland to help secure support for the Eastern European country and to help if there is a massive refugee movement in case of an invasion. On Friday, the US said it would send 3,000 more troops to Poland.
On Saturday, US President Joe Biden will speak with Vladimir Putin by phone in an effort to resolve the crisis, the Guardian reports.
