Over 5 thousand Kosovo citizens have relinquished citizenship last year. This is because in most European states, there is no qualm. While about 570 persons have sought asylum in Kosovo, unlike 2020, there were about 1,500 people seeking asylum in our country.
Department of State, Asylum and Migration Director Liridon Neziri shows that the largest number of people who have renounced Kosovo's citizenship are from Germany, and that according to him only France and Switzerland do not impose freedom from Kosovo's citizenship.
For 2021 we have over 5,000 people who have renounced the citizenship of the Republic of Kosovo. The reason for giving up citizenship is because some countries from the European Union do not allow two citizenships for citizens are not part of the European Union, given that we have a large number of immigration, so our citizens who have emigrated for years. They have already been integrated and their demand is either the request of these states is to give up the citizenship of the Republic of Kosovo or their citizenship from where they come from so that they can gain that country's citizenship. (01:01) The age average is about getting younger because the largest number of those who already give up their citizenship in the Republic of Kosovo are also born in these European Union countries”, Neziri says.
There are also persons in Kosovo seeking asylum. According to Neziri, the number of asylum seekers is smaller in 2021 compared to 2020.
As compared to 2020, it was 2021 that we faced smaller numbers of asylum seekers. Of course, 2020 has been due to pandemic and the lack of movement that has enabled immigrants to move, since it is known that Kosovo is not a destination country for asylum seekers, Kosovo is a Transit country so they just pass through Kosovo. The number of persons who have sought asylum in the Republic of Kosovo for 2021 is somewhere around 570 people is not a large number compared to last year when we had a number of about 1,500 people here, including persons who have sought international protection or were detained by Kosovo Police as illegal immigrants, we have a close number of those who asked for asylum”, Neziri said.
During January-December 2021, 5031 citizenship-free decisions have been made: 4940 positive and 91 negative decisions.
