Syria has said Tuesday it supports Russian President Vladimir Putin's decision to recognise the two Ukrainian regions, Donjeck and Luhansk, as independent.
These regions are known as Donbas.
“Syria supports President Putin's decision to recognise the Luhansk and Donjeck republics and will co-operate with them”, the SANA state news agency has said, citing Syrian Foreign Minister Faisal Mikdad.
According to the agency, Mihdad made these statements at the Waldai Forum in Moscow on 22 February.
What the West is doing against Russia today is similar to what it has done against Syria during terrorist war”, he is quoted as saying.
Russia is an ally of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad from the outbreak of war in Syria in 2011.
Midad has said the United States and the West continue to support terrorism in Syria, which poses a threat to the Middle East and the world.
On 21 February, Russian President Vladimir Putin has said he will recognise the demand of separatist leaders for independence of both regions they control in Ukraine.
He has also said he would send Russian troops to serve as, as he has called “Peacekeepers” declarations which the West and the United States have considered “pasen”.
United States, NATO and the European Union have strongly condemned Putin's decision. / REL/
