The Ukrainian Army said a soldier was killed by bombing by pro-Russian separatists Saturday morning in eastern Ukraine, where violence this week in a long conflict has sparked concern that it could be a trigger for Russian military action. US President Joe Biden said on Friday he is convinced that Russian leader Vladimir Putin has decided to invade Ukraine in the coming days, broadcast Klankosova.tv.
Ukraine's Foreign Minister, Dumtro Kuleba, has said the country's forces are operating on content, despite intense artillery shelling from Thursday across the front line east from separatist positions.
About 40 per cent to 50 per cent of Russian land forces deployed near the Ukrainian border have moved into attack positions near the border, an American defence official said, noting this as a further indication that the Russians are preparing for a possible invasion. The United States now estimates Russia will likely have collected between 1,692,000 and 190,000 personnel near Ukraine. Satellite images taken this week show military activity in numerous countries across Belarus, Ukraine's annexed Crime region and western Russia near the Ukrainian border.
