The current leader, Kim Jong Un, attended the event at Samjiyon, near Mount Paektu, the Korean icon peak on the China border.
Kim Jong Un led senior officials to bow down to a giant statue of Kim Jong Il, who settled in Samjiyon in 2016, five years after his death.
New Political Bureau member Il Hhan delivered a speech praising Kim Jong Il and encouraging people to follow the leadership of Kim Jong Un.
Kim Jong Il was born in a forest at the foot of Mount Paektu, says North Korean history. Historians outside North Korea agree that Kim Jong Il was born in Russia's far east, the AP reports, broadcast Clankosova.tv.
North Korean authorities call it February 16th, the official date of Kim Jong Il's birth, “The Day of the Noble Star”.
