Ben Emmerson, Kadri Wessel's defense attorney, has asked the court's preliminary court judge not to let the prosecution go for it, because according to him, she's trying to build a process that will last 10 years.
Emmerson said that with the witnesses and evidence presented, the prosecution is trying to prolong the trial, although it said there is still no evidence of direct involvement in crimes for any of the accused. This approach of the prosecution, the lawyer said, damages international justice.
“Everything is based on events, where none of the accused is involved.
The prosecution has given the evaluations for the time it takes for witnesses. But these estimates require more than 1300 hours just to answer the prosecution's questions. In Milosevic's case, the prosecution took only 360 hours. In our case, the prosecution requires 1300 hours just for direct questions”, the lawyer Emmerson further declared.
This estimate would take nearly 11 years. In addition to witnesses, the prosecution has presented 16 thousand material evidence. So the prosecution should be able to tighten its belt and prove its case, that if allowed by these figures it will continue for 10 years. This does not help justice. He denies justice for the accused, for victims and witnesses. It's unfortunate and it makes the court ridiculous. So someone has to tell the prosecution to manage their work”
We know what these charges are trying to achieve, but the prosecution should not take into account the length of the trial. If you do not intervene and act, you may say that you have let the prosecution loose. This is the opportunity to do something about the situation. I think it's part of your functions to set the D.A. deadline. I invite you to accept the real responsibilities to decide. If you don't, you need to understand that the situation has come out of control”, that's what the vice president said at the statuteary hearing.
