It was not immediately clear which individuals or subjects would be targeted by these sanctions.

Officials told Reuters that Tokyo will be co-ordinated with other members of the Seven Industrial Powers Group.

US sanctions for Thursday's invasion include 24 Belarusian individuals and subjects, the US Treasury Department has announced.

Japan has announced sanctions against Russia for the invasion, with Kishida naming Moscow's movements an unacceptable violation of Ukraine's sovereignty and international law.

Russian troops were advancing towards the capital Kyev on Friday, even though Russia and Ukraine signalled an opening to negotiations on the continuation of the invasion from the north, east and south, an attack threatening to overturn Europe's rule after the Cold War.
