Former Kosovo Prime Minister Avdullah Hoti has said this year will be difficult for farmers if the Kurti government does not increase subsidies to at least 25%, Periscope follows.
According to Hoti, as the prices of agricultural input rise, farmers will find it difficult to maintain production levels as in the previous year.
“According to the Statistics Agency, agricultural input prices, including seeds, fertilizers, pesticides, animal food and similar ones, have increased by 25.3% in the last quarter of 2021 compared to the previous year. For trash and animal food in particular, the price increase has been much higher.
With this increase in agricultural input prices, farmers will find it difficult to maintain production levels as in the preceding year. This will affect the decline in incomes of thousands of families with a major agricultural activity. The negative effect will be chain, as import of agricultural products will increase and the competitiveness of Kosovar producers in the domestic and external market” will worsen, writes Hoti.

The government urgently must increase agricultural subsidies to at least 25% to maintain the existing level of agricultural activity in the country. Equally important for farmers is that subsidies be paid at the time when farmers should buy agricultural inputs.
If subsidies do not increase, then this year we can see more barren land and closed animal farms.
In the context of increasing uncertainty on global markets, it is of strategic importance to ensure a minimum level of agricultural production, in addition to the sustainability of the energy supply Kosovo must provide in the long run.
This data from the Statistics Agency is collected according to Eurostat methodology, where 77 agricultural inputs are included, registering prices at agricultural drugs, veterinarian drugs, businesses and markets where agricultural inputs are traded.
