The Greek-Italy line railway, Euroferry Olympia, is involved in flames in the early hours of today's morning, while reporting on 11 missing persons.
On its board were 239 passengers and 51 crew members. The captain of the ferry has requested and ordered her abandoned, and passengers immediately boarded the rescue boats. At the scene, three ships of the Greek coast guard, pimps, and other ships nearby arrived immediately.
Meanwhile, two ships have been launched to the Albanian coastal guard and a contractor. The Greek rescue operation is attended by the Greeks as our forces are at their aid, standing at a distance of the ship. According to representatives of the armed forces, Albanian ships are on alert and in rapid intervention. So far there has been no need for intervention. The ship has moved and is located between the Himara and Portopalermos.
For an hour now, the burning ferry has been entering the Albanian waters of 0.5 miles. The event has taken place nine miles from the coast outside our waters, as work is being co-ordinated by the Navy, QNOD and General Port Captain and the situation is being monitored at any moment.
The cause of the fire, which seems still out of control, is not yet known. In the same area in December 2014, fire hit the ferry, the Atlantic rate traveling from Igumenica to Ancana where 29 people died.
Former Marine Armed Forces Commander Arthur Mecolari writes that 279 people have been evacuated by three boats to Corfu!
