Germany has long resisted increasing its defence spending following 20th century horrors, so this recent announcement marks a major policy change.
On Saturday, Scholz approved military support from the Netherlands to go to Ukraine and donated its antitank and antiaircraft missiles, breaking another policy of having refused to send weapons to conflict zones.
“There can be no further response to Putin's aggression”, Scholz said.
