“Steinmeier received 1,045 votes from 1,437 in the Federal Convention on Sunday”, Bundestag President Bärbel Bas (SPD) announced.
Members of Germany's Bundestag, or the Lower Chamber of Parliament, attended the session, along with an equal number of delegates selected from the country's 16 states, or Landet.
During the second five-year term, Steinmeier said he supports all those who promote democracy while warning of a possible Russian invasion of Ukraine.
“We are in the midst of the danger of a military conflict, a war in Eastern Europe”, Steinmeier said at the congress, adding that “Russia is responsible for this. ”
“I call on Russian President Putin: Release the ring around Ukraine's neck and choose a path that preserves peace in Europe”, he added.
