The worst situation has been recorded in Petropolis, which is located near the Brazilian capital, where landslides have removed the slope of a mountain and, as a result, all houses below it were swept by a river of mud.
Rescue teams, assisted by local residents, are also struggling with time to find missing persons, while the balance of victims is expected to deepen further.
According to the country's meteorological service in the last 24 hours, about 15 inches [25 cm] of rain has fallen.
