Russian President Vladimir Putin and his ally, Belarus leader Alexander Lukashenko, have extended the military exercises, which would end on Sunday.
A statement cited “the deterioration of the” situation in eastern Ukraine as a reason for maintaining about 30,000 Russian troops in Belarus.
The move will boost fears that Russia plans an invasion of Ukraine, which shares a long border with Belarus.
Western leaders have accused Moscow of seeking a pretext to send troops. Russia, meanwhile, has denied that it plans to invade its neighbour, the BBC writes.
US Secretary of State Antony Blinken said that extending military exercises indicates that the world is on the brink of war.
The BBC correspondent for Eastern Europe, Sarah Rainsford, said the announcement made by Belarus's Defence Ministry is another strong signal that Russia is not ready to withdraw in its stance with Western countries for Ukraine.
