More than half of Russia's central bank reserves will be blocked under new EU sanctions, CNN reports.
So EU top diplomat Josep Borrell announced on Sunday.
Speaking with European Commission chief Ursula Von der Leyeen in Brussels, Borrell said later Sunday that he would ensure the political approval of the 27 EU member states for a new package of sanctions against Russia.
With these measures, more than half of Russia's central bank reserves will be blocked”, Borrell said.
Under the package, the key Russian <x0banks will be excluded from the SIFT” system, Von der Leyen said at the press conference.
The measures against the neighbouring country would also be “strengthened”, Borrell said, in exchange for its role in “facilitating the Russian attack against Ukraine”.
Von der Leyen also announced that the EU would secure financing for the purchase of arms for Ukraine, adding that this is the first time the bloc has ever done so. / P ERISCOPI/
