The United Kingdom government's Armed Forces Minister said Russia has failed to achieve its initial goals and fighting outside Kiev were limited to Russian Special Forces units.
Speaking to the BBC, James Heapey said the intentions to take over Ukraine's major cities had not been realised. He added that the United Kingdom did not believe Russian claims that it had taken over the southeastern town of Melitopol.
Ukrainian resistance to Russian advancement seems extraordinary. All targets of Kharkiv's First Day of Russia, Kherson, Marioupol, Sumy and even Melitopol, which the Russians claim to have taken, but we are not seeing anything about it, are still all in Ukraine's hands”, he said.
“War on the outskirts of Kiev overnight, we understand they're only Russian special experts. The reality is that the armoured columns that descend from Belarus and the north to surround Kiev are still far away because they have been maintained by this extraordinary Ukrainian resistance”.
