European Union foreign policy chief Josep Borrell said on Sunday, February 27th that EU states are concerned that the crisis caused by Ukraine's Russian invasion could spread to neighbouring countries, including Moldova, Georgia and the Western Balkans.
“We are concerned about what might happen in the region,” said at a news conference in Brussels following a virtual meeting of EU foreign ministers on the crisis that is prevalent in Ukraine.
“We are afraid that Russia will not stop in Ukraine and Russian influence may start operating in neighbouring countries”, Borrell said.
In response to the crisis in Ukraine, the EU for the first time in history has announced that it will use its funds to help Ukrainians militarily.
This EU initiative includes about 45m euros that will serve military equipment.
The EU has already imposed strict sanctions on Russia.
Russia began its invasion of Ukraine on February 24th.
Severe fighting has been under way since that day.
On Sunday, it has been warned that a meeting will be held between a Ukrainian delegation and a Russian delegation, but there is still much uncertainty about this meeting.
