Today, I have ordered my administration to impose sanctions on Nord Stream 2 AG and its corporate officers”, President Joe Biden said in a statement.
“These steps are another part of our initial petition of sanctions in response to Russia's actions in Ukraine. ”
The 10 billion-euro project (8.4 billion pounds) was completed last September.
The US decision comes after German Chancellor Olaf Scholz announced that the pipeline would remain closed in response to Russia's anti-Ukrainian movements.
Vladimir Putin, meanwhile, has ordered Russian troops to eastern Ukraine after recognising two regions controlled by rebels as independent states. As Russia is positioned on the ground, a senior US defence official has said Putin is fully prepared for a large-scale invasion that could happen at any moment.
He's so ready. We have said every day now and certainly it is possible today to be that day”, the official says.
When asked about Russian troops surrounding Ukraine, the official says they are “prepared to go”.
Approximately 80% of Russian forces have been deployed, which means they are ready to invade if orders are issued, according to the recent US assessment. On Monday, about 40 to 50% of troops were said to be in that position.
They are equipped with everything from tanks and artillery to air power and sea support.
