The Ukrainian government reportedly learned about the mission on Saturday morning and issued a 36-hour curfew in Kiev to wipe out the city of Russian sabotagers.
Mercenaries were introduced from Africa five weeks ago by The Wagner Group, a private militia led by one of Russian President Vladimir Putin's closest allies.
A source linked to group activities told the Times that a total of 2,000 to 4,000 mercenaries arrived in Ukraine in January.
About 400 of them came from Belarus and headed for Kiev.
They reportedly are now awaiting a signal from the Kremlin, and they are promised great rewards for the killing of Zelensky and 23 other figures.
Last week, Zelensky said it was Russia's “number one”, but refused bids to bring it to safety, instead chose to stay in Kiev.
