Serbia's police reported on Saturday, November 26th, that they had to take care of about 1,000 people this week after shooting between smugglers and immigrants near the border with Hungary.
Six people were injured in Thursday's incident, Deputy Police Director Dragan Vasiljevic said in Belgrade.
Among those involved were citizens of Afghanistan and Morocco.
Guns, pistols, and ammunition were seized.
The so-called Balkan route, through which refugees and immigrants try to reach Western Europe, runs through Serbia and Hungary.
According to various police authorities, this year the number of migrants using this route has doubled compared to last year.
Since 2015, Hungary has been trying to prevent irregular border crossings with a metal fence on its border with Serbia.
Hundreds of immigrants trying to cross the fence with the help of smugglers are stationed in ruins and tents in Serbian villages along the Hungarian border.
Many fail and make new efforts.
Conflicts between migrants and smugglers occur constantly. An immigrant was killed in July. / REL/
