Kosovo visa liberalisation proposal expected to be voted today

Ambassadors of Member States The European Union is expected to vote on the latest proposal to the Czech presidency for visa liberalisation for Kosovo under which, liberalisation comes into force when the system E TIAS becomes operational, not later than January 1st, 2024. This vote was [...]

This vote was ahead of last week, but was removed from the agenda due to the situation in the north and south of the unsuccessful meeting of leaders held on 21 November.

According to the text which the ambassadors would vote on, in the period until the effective start of visa liberalisation Kosovo should aim at linking readmission agreements with states with which there is no such arrangement, as well as to meet obligations issued by the agreement, RTK reports.

Also, the country will be required to try to further harmonise its visa policy with the European Union's visa policy.

The vote on the ambassadorial level is expected to take place without preliminary discussions, and in that way continued legislative relevant procedures can be made, leading to final decision on visa liberalisation.

At one time, the Czech presidency in the document recalls the importance that member states cost effective entry into the ETIAS operation within the set deadlines, and invites member states to continue their feasibility efforts to ensure that the agreed deadlines are respected.

Otherwise, in case the system E TIAS becomes operational in the agreed deadline, especially in November 2023, then visa liberalisation for Kosovo is also in force.
