“They are able to repel Russian forces because of their courage and abilities, but certainly because of the advanced weapons the United States and other allies are giving to”, Stoltenberg said in an interview for the US television network NBC.

Asked about Ukraine's application for accelerated membership in the Western defence alliance, Stoltenberg said that “any decision on membership must be taken with the consensus of 30 member states”.

NATO is supporting the investigation over allegations of sabotage of Russian pipelines Nord Stream carrying gas from Russia to Europe.

Chief NATO spoke both of Moscow's threat to possible use of nuclear weapons. Stoltenberg said Russia would face serious consequences if it used them.
