Black South Korea raising questions about the deadly disaster in Seoul

South Korea is in mourning, as an investigation opened on the deaths of more than 150 people, most of them young, when a large crowd of Halloween's party crashed into a narrow alley in the night in Seoul. Still unclear is what forced the crowd to depart [...]
Still unclear is what forced the crowd heading towards the alley in the Itaewon area on Saturday evening. The Witnesses said that people fell on each other “the domino”, and some of the victims were bleeding from their noses and their mouths were being given CPR help.
South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol, who proclaimed several days of national mourning and declared Itaewon an area of destruction, visited a memorial altar near the city's hall and homazed in memory of the victims, writes The Guardian, records Periscope.
Most of the local shops and cafes are closed, and police placed cords at the site of the incident, which was filled with garbage. Schools, crafts and companies across the country suspended the planned events for Halloween. Concerts were also canceled.
The country's prime minister, Han Duck-soo, has pledged a detailed investigation, and authorities said they have focused on rebuilding the chain of events that led the way to the crash and are investigating whether anyone could have been responsible for causing the crash.
“We are analyzing the security cameras to detect the main cause of the” accident, said investigative police head Nam Gu-jun. “We will continue to question more witnesses, including local employees in the vicinity of”, he added.
On Monday afternoon, dozens of crime scene investigators and legal medical officials arrived in garbage-filled alleys, which were extremely calm after the safety of shops and cafes.
Calls for responsibility have increased in newspapers and on online social networks after witnesses reported seeing a relatively small number of police on the street proportion to the crowd's size.
Almost 100 thousand people -- most of them teenagers, dressed in Halloween suits -- had flocked to the narrow and lasses roads in ItaeWon to reach bars and locals.
Police during a statement Monday said they had sent 137 police officers to the organisation, stressing that the number was much higher than in the previous years. But local reports said most police officials were oriented on traffic control and drug use, rather than crowd control.
This has been a disaster that could have been controlled or avoided”, said Lee Young-ju, professor of fires and disasters at Seoul University. “But no measures were taken with anyone not taking responsibility in the first place”, he said.
Approximately two thirds of those killed -- 98 -- were women, and another 149 were injured. More than 80% of the dead are in their 20s and their 30s. At least four were teenagers.
The Ministry of Interior and Security said the death toll could rise even further because 33 of the injured are in critical condition.
The Witnesses said that many people did not seem to notice the calamity taking place a few steps away from them. Some dressed in Halloween suits kept singing and dancing until others lay lifeless on earth. /Periscopi/
