The resolution was supported by 143 countries, while 35 states, including China and India, abstained.

As well as Russia, four countries refused the vote, Belarus, North Korea, Syria and Nicaragua respectively.

Though symbolic, it was the highest number of votes against Russia since the invasion.

Last week, at a grand ceremony in the Kremlin, President Vladimir Putin signed documents to make Ukraine's eastern regions Luhansk, Donetsk, Zaporizija and Kherson part of Russia.

The agreements were signed with the leaders installed by Moscow of the four regions and came after self-declared referenda in areas that were denounced as “-magination” from the West.

The resolution calls on the international community not to recognise any of Russia's annexation claims and requires its immediate “reactivating”. He also welcomes and “extends strong support” for efforts to de-species conflict through negotiations.

Ukraine's president, Volodymyr Zelensky, said he was grateful to the countries that supported him.

The “Bota spoke its word ʹ Russia's efforts for annexation are worthless and will never be recognised by the free nations”, he wrote on Twitter, adding that Ukraine would make “translate all its land”.

US President Joe Biden said the vote sent a clear “message to” Moscow.

“The actions of this conflict are clear to all, and the world has sent a clear message in response to Russia cannot wipe out a sovereign state from map”, he said.

Dame Barbara Woodward, Britain's ambassador to the UN, said Russia had failed in the field of battle and at the UN, adding that the countries had joined to protect the global body charter.

Russia has isolated itself, but Russia alone can stop suffering. The time to end the war is now”, she said.

The General Assembly vote came after Russia used the veto right to prevent actions at the Security Council -- the body responsible for preserving international peace and security. As permanent members, China, the United States, France and the United Kingdom also carry veto in the council.

There has been a call for Russia to be stripped of its veto right after the invasion of Ukraine.
