During this conversation, Biden is expected to [refirm] US support for Ukraine's sovereignty and territorial integrity in light of Russian aggression”, a White House official said.
This will be the second conversation among leaders in the last three weeks, as the White House is trying to address the military threat that has alarmed NATO, while authorities in Kiev have expressed concerns that in the coming weeks Russia could conquer Ukraine.
The conversation between Beden and Zelenskiy follows a conversation American President held on 30 December with Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin. In this conversation, Biden had said the US and its allies would impose severe sanctions if Russia invaded Ukraine.
Russia has deployed around 100,000 troops near the border with Ukraine, while Moscow is seeking security guarantees from the US and NATO.
In particular, Russia wants NATO not to belong to Ukraine and other states of the former Soviet Union and withdraw military outlets from Central and Eastern Europe.
The Biden and NATO administration have repeatedly said that the North Atlantic Alliance welcomes every state, and no state has the right to veto the aspirations of a state to join this organisation. Washington has said it will not discuss Ukraine's security without consulting Kiev.
