During the night, there were attempts to attack buildings in the country's largest city, Almati, and the attacks “have been liquidated”, said police spokeswoman Saltanat Asyrbeck. Efforts to attack other buildings came after the attack on the city mayor's office, which was set on fire.
The state television channel, Khabar-24, quoted the commander's office as saying that in addition to the 12 police officers killed, 353 others have suffered injuries, the Associated Press wrote.
The CSTO, Russia-led regional military alliance, said on Thursday it would send peacekeeping troops to Kazakhstan following President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev's request. Protests in Kazakhstan began on Sunday against rising fuel prices. Protests began in the western part of the country, but they also spread to Almay and the capital, Nur-Sultan.
On Wednesday, the Kazakh president vowed that he would take tough measures to suppress the uprising and declared a two-week emergency for the entire country, extending what had been declared only in some areas.
