Under the laws in Georgia, the murder should be sentenced to life imprisonment if prosecutors do not seek death sentences. The slain man's family had asked the court judge not to show tenderness to the accused in the verdict.
Before the sentence was issued, the judge said: “Ahmad Arbery happened and was shot and killed, because individuals here in the courtroom took the law into their own hands”, writes The Guardian.
The judge added that Arbery had left the house to run and ended up running to save his life for five minutes while the three men were chasing him in cars. During the description, the judge paused for a moment to convey the feeling of this prosecution.
The first two convicts will spend the rest of their lives in prison, while Bryan has the right to seek relief of his sentence only after 30 years, which is the lowest sentence allowed.
