Ivan Najjar Alavi, head of the General Division of Investigation at the Acehi prosecutor's office in Indonesia, said the court handed a harsher sentence on the woman after she admitted she had sex relations outside her marriage.
The judges found it difficult to convict the man, who was then the head of the fishing agency and also married, because he denied all charges, Alavi said.
“During the trial, he refused anything, denying all charges. Thus, [judges] are not able to prove whether he is guilty”, Alavi told reporters after the public scourge given to violators of the Peace code in Aceh.
The woman's whip was stopped for a few moments because she could not bear the pain.
Aceh is the only region in predominantly Muslim Indonesia that imposes Sheriat's law, which allows for whips on charges involving fortune games, adultery, drinking alcohol and homosexual relations.
