Roberta Metsola, a Christian-democratic politician from Malta, was elected president of the European Parliament in a two-and-a-half-year term.
She comes to this post after David Sassol died last week.
Metsola is the third woman to be elected to this post. The Ottoman lawmaker, 43, became the most elected EP president.
Sassol, 65, who died last week, had been ill in recent months and had said he did not want to run for a new mandate.
Metsola, during Tuesday's vote, won 458 votes from 616 deputies who participated in the vote.
Since Sassol's death, Metsola has been a deserter of the EP president's office. She said she wants to continue Sassol's work style.
David fought hard to sit people on a table. It is the pledge to hold together constructive forces in Europe that I will work”, she said.
The European Parliament has become an even stronger institution within the European bloc in recent years. The EP represents 450 million EU residents and calls itself a “heart of European democracy”.
