Among the victims are members of security forces. President Kasim-Yomart Tokayev has proclaimed national mourning days to victims of the tragic event. A military alliance of former Soviet states led by Russia, the Organisation of the Kolektive Security Treaty (CSTO), has sent paratroopers to Kazakhstan as part of a peacekeeping force. A total of about 2,500 security forces will be sent to Kazakhstan, the CSTO said in a statement.
Russian President Vladimir Putin, in a video conference with Tokayev, supported his latest proposal for a summit of CSTO to discuss the riots. Also, Belarus's president, Alexander Lukashenko, who has pressured antigovernmental riots in his country, held a conversation with Tokayev.
